Right from the Start is a diverse, bipartisan coalition committed to ensuring that every child in Maine has access to high-quality early care and education. We believe that investing in the early years—from birth to age eight—is essential for healthy development, school readiness, and long-term success. By bringing together parents, educators, healthcare providers, business leaders, and policymakers, we work collaboratively to strengthen Maine's early childhood systems.

Working Together for Maine's Children

The earliest years of a child's life provide a critical foundation for learning, health, and well-being. Creating a strong early childhood system requires families, educators, communities, organizations, and policymakers to work together.

Right from the Start brings these voices together to advocate for practical policies and investments that strengthen opportunities for Maine children and the people who care for them.

Our mission is to promote policies and investments that support accessible, affordable, and high-quality early care and education across Maine.We focus on creating an integrated continuum of programs and services that address the needs of children and families, regardless of where they live.

By connecting early learning with family services, workforce development, sustainable financing, and reliable data, Right from the Start works toward an early childhood system that supports families throughout the critical years from birth through age eight.

Why Early Care & Education Matters

High-quality early experiences can help children build the cognitive, social, emotional, and physical skills they need as they grow. At the same time, accessible and affordable early care allows parents and caregivers to participate in the workforce and helps communities across Maine thrive.

Investing in young children is therefore more than an investment in education. It is an investment in Maine's families, workforce, communities, and future.

To achieve our mission, Right from the Start concentrates on four key areas:

1. Early Learning & Care

Advocate for community-based partnerships that expand access to quality early care and education programs, including Head Start and home visiting services.

Strong partnerships can help communities build an early learning system that meets families where they are. By connecting early care providers, schools, Head Start programs, home visitors, and other community resources, Maine can provide children with more consistent opportunities to learn and develop.

2. Family Supports & Services

Promote the development of coordinated systems like Help Me Grow to assist families in navigating and accessing essential services.

Families should be able to identify and connect with appropriate resources without having to navigate a fragmented system on their own. Better coordination among programs and providers can make essential services easier to understand and access.

3. Workforce Advancement

Support initiatives that improve compensation, benefits, and professional development opportunities for early childhood educators.

Maine's early childhood professionals are essential to a strong early care and education system. Supporting competitive compensation, meaningful benefits, professional development, and career pathways can help Maine attract and retain qualified educators.

4. Financing & Data Collection

Work towards sustainable funding models and integrated data systems to inform policy decisions and track outcomes.

Sustainable investments help ensure that early childhood programs can serve Maine families over the long term. Reliable and integrated data can also help policymakers understand needs, identify gaps, measure outcomes, and make informed decisions about the future of Maine's early childhood system.

Since our inception, Right from the Start has played a pivotal role in advancing early childhood policy in Maine. Notable achievements include:

Securing increased funding for child care programs and workforce development.
Influencing legislation that supports early learning and family services.
Collaborating with stakeholders to develop comprehensive strategies for early childhood system improvement.

These accomplishments demonstrate what is possible when organizations and individuals from different sectors unite around the shared goal of giving Maine children a strong start.

Right from the Start continues to bring diverse perspectives to the table, helping elevate early childhood issues and build momentum for policies that benefit children, families, educators, and communities.
