This is one in a series of profiles on the 2018 Giraffe Award winners. Each week leading up to the Champions for Children Luncheon
on November 15th, we will feature a profile on a 2018 Giraffe Award Winner and showcase how they “stick out their neck” for Maine children, youth and families. This week, we are pleased to introduce you to the Susan L. Curtis Foundation and Camp Susan Curtis.
The mission of the Susan L. Curtis Charitable Foundation and Camp Susan Curtis is to ensure that economically disadvantaged Maine youth develop the individual character, self-confidence, and skills essential to becoming independent, contributing citizens. They work to achieve this through the provision of tuition-free, high quality, camping, educational and social experiences that bolster education attainment, promote health and well-being, and support the development of life and workplace skills that will prepare young people for careers and contribute to Maine’s economic future.
Founded in 1971, the Foundation’s programs are delivered primarily at Camp Susan Curtis in Stoneham and year-round through CSC Leaders, serving 500 youth each year through development programs and activities. Of youth participating 4 or more years and completing leadership training, 100% have graduated from high school, and 81% have gone on to post-secondary education. "As an educator SCF reminds me of the impact of our work, and the importance of the words and experiences we give to our youth. I have been inspired by the students and their stories, and have appreciated the grassroots model of Maine people helping Maine youth, and thereby our state and its future."

The supporters who were instrumental in the creation of the Foundation have always believed every child matters, and that belief carries on today through the work of Camp Susan Curtis, a safe haven where young spirits are nourished, young minds developed, and where people believe fully and unconditionally that the future of every Maine child has value and promise.

The Susan L. Curtis Foundation will be awarded the 2018 Organization Giraffe Award for their commitment to providing opportunities for vulnerable young people in Maine, on November 15th at the Champions for Children Luncheon.
