Meet Elinor Goldberg, 2019 Giraffe Award Winner

This is one in a series of profiles on the 2019 Giraffe Award winners. Each week leading up to the Champions for Children Luncheon on November 7th, we will feature a profile of a 2019 Giraffe Award Winner and showcase how they “stick out their neck” for Maine children, youth and families. This week, we are pleased to introduce you to Elinor Goldberg, former Executive Director of the Maine Children's Alliance.

Elinor Goldberg was the founding Executive Director of the Maine Children's Alliance, and retired in 2011. For 17 years, Ellie led MCA in public policy to improve the lives of children and families in Maine. During her tenure at MCA, she was awarded various national and state awards for her leadership and advocacy.

Originally trained as a social worker at the University of Connecticut, she has held many jobs since moving to Maine in 1971, including as a house painting contractor, substance abuse counselor, video producer and director, child protective case manager, and finally, as MCA's Executive Director. During her time at MCA, Ellie was particularly successful in advocating at both the state and national levels for the expansion of the Children's Health Insurance Program , which brought critical health care coverage to many more Maine children as a result. Ellie has served on several advisory councils, including the Child Care Advisory Council and the MaineCare Advisory Council, and most recently on the board of the local Belfast Area Child Care Center and the regional Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare Foundation.

Elinor Goldberg  will be awarded the 2019 Director's Award for her important role in the formation and success of children's advocacy through her work at the Maine Children's Alliance, on November 7th at our Champions for Children celebration.
