MCA Statement on Appointment of Mary Mayhew to Director of Federal Medicaid Program

If we want the children of Maine and the nation to have a prosperous future, we need our future generation to remain healthy, so they can play, learn and grow. A critical piece of that is providing access to quality, affordable health care coverage for children and families.
The appointment of Mary Mayhew to head the federal Medicaid program – including CHIP (the Children’s Health Insurance Program) is an alarming choice given her track record at DHHS in Maine. This selection indicates a potential and dangerous shift away from decades-long support for a system that has ensured that kids with low income or complex medical needs have access to the health care they need.
Under Mayhew’s leadership at DHHS, Maine rolled back critical health care coverage for Maine’s most vulnerable families and opposed Medicaid expansion to cover more Mainers. We can’t afford to have someone with a track record of cutting critical services and coverage in charge of a healthcare program that covers 70 million Americans and accounts for 10% of the federal budget.
The Maine Children’s Alliance will be ready to fight to protect the coverage that kids and families have relied on for decades. Our future success relies on a strong, healthy foundation for children, and that means investing in their care and in care for their families. Mainers and the nation can’t afford to weaken that foundation by removing critical healthcare coverage for children and families.
