FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AUGUSTA, Maine (May 25, 2011)—The Maine Children’s Alliance is now accepting nominations for the 17th annual Giraffe Awards, given to those who “stick their necks out for kids.” Since 1995, MCA has recognized those who do extraordinary work on behalf of children in communities all over Maine. The annual Giraffe Awards program has been so successful in calling attention to the achievements of dedicated volunteers, professionals and organizations that MCA has adopted the giraffe as its symbol for its ongoing efforts to “stick our necks out” to improve the well-being of children, youth and families in Maine. “Those who advocate for children are often unsung heroes,” said Dean Crocker, MCA president and CEO. “The Giraffe Awards offers a chance to call attention to the amazing work that people are doing in communities across Maine to help our young people in ways that have lasting and widespread effects.” The Giraffe Awards recognize winners in different categories, including a “President’s Award,” outstanding individual award, youth award, business award and organization award. Past winners have included people working in children’s mental health, youth camps, Maine businesses that have been generous to young people, volunteers, educators and many more. Maine Children’s Alliance hosts an annual event, Champions for Children, to celebrate and honor the Giraffe Award winners. This year’s event, scheduled for November 10 at the Freeport Hilton Garden Inn, puts a fresh emphasis on kids, with young people helping with every aspect of the event—from musical entertainment to technical support. The event will also feature giraffe artwork made by area students for the occasion as part of an art contest run by MCA.
