Last week, the Maine Children's Alliance joined the Maine Children's Growth Council for a Legislative Reception on early childhood in Maine. Research tells us that the early years are so critical to a child's future development. The strong showing at this event proved that there is broad support and understanding for early childhood in Maine.
This single issue brought together lawmakers, law enforcement leaders, business leaders, and child advocates because if there is one thing we can all agree on, it is that our children matter.Growth Council members Rep. Dick Farnsworth and Rep. Heather Sirocki offered opening remarks and set the tone of the event. Rep. Farnsworth spoke to his dedicated career in education and how it translates to his legislative service, while Rep. Sirocki spoke to her experience and role as a mother in raising her children. The event also featured speakers Dana Connors, President of the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, Chief Mike Field, Bath Chief of Police and President of the Maine Chiefs of Police, and Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry, President of the Maine Sheriffs Association. While each speaker brought a unique insight to the discussion, one sentiment was abundantly clear: our children are a nonpartisan issue.
