This is part of a series of profiles on the 2021 Giraffe Award winners. Each week leading up to the Champions for Children virtual celebration on November 4th, we will feature a profile of a 2021 Giraffe Award Winner and showcase how they “stick their neck out” for Maine children, youth, and families. This week, we are pleased to introduce you to cPort Credit Union.

cPort Credit Union was founded in 1931 as the Federal Employees Credit Union of Maine. At the time, it was only the third credit union in the state. Since then, the credit union has grown significantly, with five branches in Portland, Augusta, and Scarborough. It has also changed names to reflect its membership, from what was once government employees, to now being available to anyone who lives or works in Cumberland, Kennebec, Androscoggin, Sagadahoc, or York counties.

cPort has shown a commitment to providing personalized services and connecting with the communities they serve. In particular, cPort has been a leader in lending and financial services for New Mainers.

The Indus Fund is a community-supported microloan program for the immigrant community in Maine. Through this program, cPort is able to offer below-market interest rate microfinance loans to service the needs of small business owners within the immigrant community of Maine.

Recognizing a need, cPort also created the citizenship loan to help New Mainers finance their path to U.S. citizenship. A cPort Citizenship Loan helps cover costs associated with reaching citizenship and helps to establish credit.

cPort Credit Union will be awarded the 2021 Business Giraffe Award for their commitment to providing financial opportunities for all Mainers in their communities on November 4th at our Champions for Children celebration.

We hope you will join us for the 2021 Champions for Children and Giraffe Awards event ! And keep an eye out for upcoming profiles featuring the rest of our 2021 Giraffe Award winners.

AUGUSTA, ME—On Tuesday the President released his blueprint for the federal budget , which if enacted, would be detrimental to Maine’s future and the health and well-being of our children, youth and families. The President’s proposals go back on the Federal Government’s long-held commitments to children in the areas of health, nutrition and education. These drastic cuts targeting programs like Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will adversely affect child development in Maine and there will be serious consequences for years to come.

Through the Maine state budget, we can support solutions that respond to the needs of the moment and invest in building a more vibrant, equitable future for our children. an unprecedented opportunity to strengthen and stabilize families who continue to face significant health and economic challenges related to the coronavirus pandemic. They also provide an opportunity to invest in the long-term recovery of our state, by investing in the programs and services that support the needs of working families, who are raising the next generation of Mainers, and who are the backbone of our workforce and communities.
