Congressman John Baldacci and Police Officers Read to Children

Old Town Police Officers, Debbie and Mike Holmes, and Congressman John Baldacci will be reading books aloud to children Friday, August, 17 at 10:30 AM at the Old Town Fleet Bank, located at 101 South Main St. This story hour is one in a series of GREAT Beginning Story Hours that will take place throughout the year at Fleet Banks across Maine.

The GREAT Beginnings Story Hours are the result of a partnership between the Maine Humanities Council's Born to Read program and the GREAT Beginnings program.

The mission of Born to Read [BTR] is to promote reading aloud among families with young children. Service providers and volunteers around the state have been trained by BTR staff to show parents how to create exciting and enjoyable family story times, and how to develop activities that build on the ideas in the stories they have just shared.

According to Dorothy Schwartz, Executive Director of the Maine Humanities Council, "Born To Read is based on the premise that reading aloud is essential to the great beginning' that every young child deserves. This program gives us another way to serve families with very young children to promote the power and pleasure of reading aloud together."

GREAT Beginnings is a collaboration of the Maine Children's Alliance and Fleet Bank to promote public awareness of the importance of quality child care and early education and to provide parents with information to help their children achieve their full potential.
